Bioplastics.guide is an independent educational resource covering bioplastics: what they are made of, how they behave, and what happens to them after use. It exists to close the distance between academic polymer science and the working knowledge that professionals, students, policymakers and consumers actually need.

Why this site exists

“Biodegradable”, “compostable” and “bio-based” are used loosely and often interchangeably, including by people who should know better. The result is confusion among consumers and buyers, and occasionally in regulation. These pages set out what bioplastics are, how they are classified and how they perform outside a test protocol.

The practical goal is better decisions: a packaging engineer choosing the right bio-based polymer, a municipal waste manager assessing a compostable packaging program, a student writing a thesis on sustainable materials.

What is covered

The Knowledge Zone is the reference library, organized into six areas:

  • Material science fundamentals — The chemistry, structure, and properties of bio-based and biodegradable polymers, including detailed profiles of materials like PLA, PHA, starch blends, and bio-PE.

How the content is produced

Content is written against primary sources: peer-reviewed research, published standards documents, and data from organizations including European Bioplastics, the nova-Institute, the Biodegradable Products Institute and the International Organization for Standardization. Figures are attributed to the body that published them, and approximations are marked as approximations.

Five rules govern what gets published:

  • Scientific accuracy — All claims are grounded in peer-reviewed research, established standards, and verified industry data. We cite primary sources wherever possible.
  • Objectivity — We do not promote specific products, brands, or commercial interests. Our content evaluates materials based on their documented properties and performance.
  • Currency — Content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new research findings, updated standards, and evolving market conditions.
  • Clarity — Technical topics are explained in accessible language without sacrificing accuracy. We define jargon when first introduced and structure content for easy navigation.
  • Transparency — We clearly distinguish between established scientific facts, emerging research, and areas where scientific consensus is still developing.

Where the evidence is genuinely unsettled, the pages say so rather than picking a side and presenting it as consensus.

Independence

Bioplastics.guide is not owned by, funded by or affiliated with any bioplastics manufacturer, trade association or advocacy organization, and no sponsor influences what appears here. That is what makes it possible to write plainly about the limitations of these materials as well as their benefits, including the gap between laboratory biodegradation and real-world performance.
