Sulzer Chemtech has opened a biopolymer scale-up center in Winterthur, Switzerland, aimed at the stage where most bioplastics innovations die. The Sulzer biopolymer center holds pilot-scale polymerization reactors, compounding lines and testing equipment for PLA, PHA, PBS and other emerging biopolymers.
The scale-up gap
An estimated 90% of bioplastics innovations never reach commercial production, and the failure point is between laboratory proof-of-concept and full-scale manufacturing. Scaling changes heat transfer, mixing dynamics and residence times all at once, and a process that worked in a flask stops working in a reactor.
Sulzer Chemtech has spent decades on mixing, reaction and separation technology for the polymer industry. Committing a facility to bio-based polymers is a read on where that industry is going.

What is in the facility
Polymerization: pilot reactors from 10L to 500L, covering ring-opening polymerization of lactide for PLA, PHA processing, and polycondensation of bio-based succinic acid for PBS.
Compounding: twin-screw extruders with modular barrels for formulation work, including nucleating agents for PLA, plasticizers for PHA and mineral fillers, at batch sizes from 5 kg to 200 kg.
Testing: GPC, DSC, melt flow indexing and mechanical testing on site, so process changes can be evaluated as they are made rather than weeks later.
Companies book the center under a contract development model. Sulzer engineers contribute process knowledge and clients keep full IP rights.
Who this helps
Smaller companies, mostly. Building a pilot plant costs millions that a startup with a promising polymer does not have, and that single fact explains a large share of the 90% failure rate. The polymer-agnostic setup serves the whole bioplastics market rather than one material.
What comes next
